How to install Written Guide with Bondtech Parts CR - 10 Smart. (Same step can be performed on CR-6 (SE/Max) but use correct parts.

Step 1: Mount Plate Preparation:

Check if the M3 square nut is installed in the LGX Lite mount plate. Install one in case it isn't.
Check if you have the 4 M3x6 low head 2mm hex socket screws. They may also be M3x6 button head in case you source them.
A Capricorn tube with at least 30mm and 2 M3x10 screws are also required.
The hotend/extruder mounting set is supplied pre-assembled, unscrew the M3x27 low head screw.
Remove the M3x27 low head screw to unbind both mount plates.
Bring the mounting plates apart.

The M3x27 screw mentioned above can also be replaced with a M3x25 or M3x30. 

Step 2: Cutting the Capricorn Tube:

Align the hotend mount with the hotend.
Use the 2mm Hex Key and the 2 M3x10 button head screws to attach the mount to the hotend through the strain gauge.

Align the LGX Lite mount plate with the hotend mount.
Insert the LGX Lite mount into the hotend mount.
Use a M3x27 low head screw to bind both parts together.
Tighten it al the way in but don't over tighten.
Insert the Capricorn tube through the LGX Lite mount using the filament path hole.
Heat up the hotend and press it all the way down.
Take the tube cutting fixture
and apply it to the Capricorn tube.
Use a hobby knife blade to cut the tube through the slit.
Remove the fixture. The Capricorn now stands 3mm above the LGX Lite mount.
Remove the M3x27 low head screw.
Remove the LGX Lite mount plate.

Step 3: Preparing the LGX Lite

Before installing the LGX Lite mount plate into the LGX Lite, place the four M3 square nuts into its bottom pockets, then assemble it back again. 

Install 2 square nuts in the bottom front pockets. It is a hard fit. Press them down well.
Install 2 square nuts in the bottom rear pockets. It is a hard fit. Press them down well.

All generic Bondtech extruders are geared. When a geared extruder is used to upgrade a non-geared extruder printer, the feeding direction will reverse.

For that reason, it is necessary to invert the stepper motor rotation by swapping a couple of wires.

On the LDO motors we supply with the LGX Lite, you must swap the left hand-side or the right hand-side pair of wires. Check the LDO stepper motor TDS here if you need to


Using the image as guide, swap the green wire with the red. Here is how to do it:

  1. push the red wire further into the connector
  2. push down the metal tab (where the arrow is pointing to)
  3. pull the red wire out
  4. do the same with the green
  5. lift the tabs back up (using a sharp tool)
  6. now push the red wire into the 2nd slot
  7. push the green wire into the 1st slot

Step 6A: Set correct e-steps


Set the proper e-steps value

The LGX Lite uses an e-value equal to 562 when using 16 microsteps;

This file uses the M92 command to change the e-steps value and saves it with the M500.

Mind that we have this also set on the Start G-code we supply below.


Step 6B: Set the correct motor current (VREF Method)

With Multimeter: 

It is very hard to read the current being fed to stepper motors. To determine that current we rely on the Vref value. The Vref value is a voltage reference measured in VDC that can be read using a multimeter. It helps us setting the current output of the stepper motor driver. 

Different 3D printer mainboards use different stepper motor drivers. Each type of stepper motor drivers has its own formula to calculate the required Vref to get a specific current.

Without Multimeter:


If your printer doesn't have DigiPOTs, and in case you don't have a multimeter to visualize the Vref you may still adjust the current fed to the LGX stepper motor by trial and error.

Use the analog potentiometer (inside yellow ring)next to the extruder's stepper motor driver (below the heatsink inside the red ring), and turn the potentiometer a few degrees at a time.

Rotate it counter clockwise to lower the current, or clockwise to increase it.

Between each iteration, use the printer and check if the stepper motor is not getting hot neither it is loosing steps.

Lower current if stepper motor is too hot to touch.

Increase current if stepper motor is loosing steps.



Step 6C: Set the correct motor current (Firmware/Klipper/Marlin Method)

To use the LGX® or LGX® Lite, run the stepper motor with currents between ~0.45 and ~0.65A. (Please set driver current via marlin on screen and save to EEPROM or within Klipper Printer Config.

This current interval is just a recommendation and it should be optimal to keep the stepper motor running with enough torque and low enough surface temperature. 

Step 7: Update Start/End G Code
